Membership in the student union opens doors to numerous benefits and discounts – join the student union and make the most of all the perks!

By joining the student union, you will receive an official student card that grants access to a wide range of discounts and benefits both locally and nationwide! After paying the membership fee, you’ll get a valid sticker on your plastic student card, and by activating the Slice mobile student card, you can enjoy a variety of exclusive, valuable deals both nearby and across the country. As a member, you can take full advantage of all student benefits.

The benefits go beyond discounts: as a member of the Student Union, you’ll receive a two-month digital subscription to Savon Sanomat, a paper student calendar, and the best coffee, tea, and hot chocolate on campus at discounted prices from the Student Union’s always affordable cafes. We also offer Finland’s cheapest tickets to Finnkino theaters for our members.

It’s always worth showing your student card! Whether you’re eating at student restaurants, visiting museums, theaters, or swimming pools – the discounts are significant! And when you activate the Slice mobile student card, you’ll have access to thousands of student benefits across Finland.

Here’s how you can check how to join and activate your Slice mobile student card.

The most valuable benefits from the Student Union SAVOTTA for members:

  • Official student card with a valid sticker: Grants access to local and national student discounts, such as lunch discounts at KELA-supported student restaurants, and discounts at museums, theaters, swimming pools, and other service providers.

Remember these benefits as well:

  • With a valid student card, you get student-priced lunches at KELA-supported student restaurants across Finland. You can find detailed information about Kuopio’s student restaurants here.
  • It’s also a good idea to show your card at museums, theaters, and swimming pools. Many other places offer student-priced tickets as well. It’s always worth asking about a student discount!
  • As a K-Plussa Student member, you’ll get 5% Plussa money back on your grocery purchases and other great perks.

How to save as a member of the Student Union:

Here is an example calculation of the financial benefit you can get with Student Union membership. Let’s assume that a student actively uses student discounts for one academic year (9 months):

1. Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate on campus (Bar & cafeSAVOTTA and cafeSAVOTTA)

  • Member price: savings of approximately €0.50 per cup
  • Coffee purchase: 3 times a week
  • Savings: 3 coffees x 4 weeks x €0.50 x 9 months = €54

2. Finnkino movie tickets €8.50 per ticket

  • Discount: around €8 per ticket
  • Movie visits: 4 times a year
  • Savings: 4 tickets x €8 = €32

3. Savon Sanomat digital subscription (2 months) for free

  • Regular price: €37 for 2 months
  • Savings: €37

4. Paper student calendar

  • Calendar price in stores: €14.95
  • Savings: free calendar = €14.95

5. Slice mobile card benefits year-round

  • Average savings: e.g., €5 per benefit
  • Usage: 4 benefits per month (e.g., restaurants, clothing stores, etc.)
  • Savings: €5 x 4 x 12 months = €240

6. Student lunches (easiest to get with a valid student card)

      • Average discount on lunch: €2.55 per meal
      • Lunches: 10 times a month
      • Annual savings: 10 lunches x €2.55 x 9 months = €229.50

Total savings:

NATIONAL BENEFITS

  • Train tickets: VR (Finnish railroads) offers a 30% discount on basic, saver, and multi-ride tickets for long-distance travel. In commuter trains, you get a 50% discount on single tickets and a discount on multi-ride tickets. Be sure to check VR’s current offers as well.
  • Bus tickets: Student discounts vary depending on the operating company. Schedules, pricing, and tickets can be found on Matkahuolto’s website at liput.matkahuolto.fi or the Reitit- ja liput app.
  • Kilroy Travels: With a student card, you get international discount cards, which offer student-priced airline tickets. More information at Kilroy.fi/opiskelijalennot.

  • Visa or Mastercard: Students over 18 with no payment defaults can apply for a Visa or Mastercard credit card. The card is applied for from your own bank. Check with your bank for more information.
