1 / STUDENT UNION MEMBERSHIP AND MEMBERSHIP FEE

Do I have to join the Student Union?

Joining the Student Union is voluntary, but as a member, you get many valuable benefits.

How do I become a member of the Student Union?

The first step to becoming a member of the Student Union is to give permission for data transfer from Savonia to the Student Union. This ensures your right to study and your field of study. Once you’ve given permission, your information will be transferred from Savonia’s system to the Student Union’s register in approximately one day. You will receive a separate notification via Savonia’s email when the information has been successfully transferred. After that, you can become a member and pay the membership fee online or at service points.

Who can become a member of the Student Union?

All degree students, including part-time and postgraduate UAS students, can join the Student Union. First, you need to give permission for data transfer from Savonia to the Student Union.

What are the benefits of Student Union membership?

As a Student Union member, you gain access to all national and local student benefits and discounts throughout Finland, no matter where you are.

How can I pay the membership fee?

You can pay the membership fee either online or at the Microkatu campus service points.

How much does Student Union membership cost?

Our Student Union membership fee is one of the most affordable in Finland:

  • €20.00 per semester (autumn or spring semester)
  • €27.00 per academic year (both autumn and spring semesters)
  • €40.00 for 2 academic years (when pursuing a 60 ECTS credit Master’s degree, paid at once)
  • €60.00 for 3 academic years (when pursuing a 90 ECTS credit Master’s degree, paid at once)
  • €70.00 for 3.5 academic years (210 ECTS credits, paid at once; saving at least €31*)
  • €80.00 for 4 academic years (240 ECTS credits, paid at once; saving at least €28*)
  • €90.00 for 4.5 academic years (270 ECTS credits, paid at once; saving at least €38*)

Can I pay the membership fee in the middle of my studies for the remaining study period?

Yes, you can, if you have 1.5 years or more of your studies remaining. In that case, the membership fees are as follows:

  • €30.00 for 1.5 academic years
  • €40.00 for 2 academic years
  • €60.00 for 3 academic years
  • €70.00 for 3.5 academic years.

I’m a new student and want to join before the start of my studies and get my student card on the first day of school. How can I do this?

You can join online after receiving the necessary credentials, email address, and campus ID from Savonia. Additionally, you must give permission for data transfer from Savonia to the Student Union. Afterward, you can pay the membership fee online and add your own photo to your student card order.

I’m a new student and would like to use student benefits before the start of school. What should I do?

Please refer to the previous question. After ordering your student card online, send a request for mobile student card activation to the Student Union once you’ve received an email notification about the validity sticker and mobile student card activation. After this you can then start using the Slice and/or Pivo mobile student card.

2 / VALIDITY STICKER

What is a validity sticker?

The validity sticker is a label placed in the bottom corner of your plastic student card, indicating the card’s validity. It serves as proof of payment of the membership fee to the Student Union.

What is the difference between semester and academic year stickers, and until when are they valid?

A semester sticker is valid for either the autumn or spring semester. The autumn semester sticker is valid from August to the end of January, while the spring semester sticker is valid from December to the end of September. An academic year sticker is valid for the entire academic year, from August to the end of the following September. If you pay the annual fee in January, you will need to get a new sticker in September from the campus service point.

How can I obtain a validity sticker for my plastic student card?

After paying the membership fee online, you can collect the sticker from campus service points. If you pay the membership fee at the Microkatu campus service points, you will receive the sticker immediately.

I cannot collect the sticker from the campus; how can I get the sticker on my plastic card?

If you are a distance-learning student and do not have any business at the campus, the sticker can be mailed to your home. Contact the Student Union to arrange postage (jari.smolander@savonia.fi).

I have paid the membership fee for multiple years, but my mobile student card only shows a one-year validity sticker?

The validity sticker on the mobile student card can be valid for a maximum of one academic year. If you pay for your entire study period, for example, in the fall of 2023, your mobile student card will show a validity sticker of 9/2024. The validity sticker does not automatically update on the mobile student card. It will be updated when you collect the validity sticker for your plastic student card or request separate activation from the Student Union (see section 4 on the Mobile Student Card).

3 / PLASTIC UAS STUDENT CARD

Is the plastic student card mandatory?

If you have on-campus classes, the card is mandatory. It serves as a personal identification card, an access card for multifunctional devices, and a key for storage lockers. In social and healthcare studies, the card is also used as a student ID during internships.

How can I order a student card?

If you participated in the card photo sessions at the beginning of your studies, the Student Union will handle the card ordering process. Otherwise, you can order the card online or contact the Student Union (jari.smolander@savonia.fi).

I ordered a student card from the online store, but I have not received a message about the card being ready. What should I do?

Student cards are ordered once a week. You will receive a message to your school email about the card order within a week of placing your order. If you don’t receive a message, there may have been an error in the card ordering process, such as uploading your photo. Contact the Student Union (jari.smolander@savonia.fi).

4 / MOBILE STUDENT CARD

As a Student Union member, you can use both Slice and Pivo mobile student cards for free.

What is Pivo mobile student card?

Pivo is a mobile payment application that can be used by customers of all Finnish banks. Pivo is available for iPhones and Android phones. The mobile student card can be found in Pivo’s service menu. As a Student Union member, you can activate the mobile student card. Detailed instructions are provided here.

What is Slice mobile student card?

Slice mobile student card works the same way as the plastic student card but is available on your mobile device. Slice is Finland’s largest student benefit service and offers thousands of student benefits all over Finland. To activate the Slice student card, you will receive separate activation instructions in your school email after paying the membership fee. If you pay the membership fee online, remember to send a mobile student card activation request after picking up the validity sticker for your plastic student card.

What are the benefits of a mobile student card?

A mobile student card serves as a digital student card on your phone, alongside the plastic card. It also provides access to thousands of national and local benefits negotiated by Slice.fi.

How can I activate the Slice mobile student card?

You can download the mobile student card from the app store and activate it after paying the Student Union membership fee and receiving instructions in your school email. If you pay the membership fee online and cannot collect the validity sticker for your plastic student card, you can send a separate activation request for the mobile student card. If you have not ordered a plastic student card or participated in the card photo sessions, you will need to provide your photo separately to get the Slice mobile student card (toimisto.savotta@savonia.fi). After sending the photo, you will receive separate instructions in your email for downloading the mobile student card.

How can I activate the Pivo mobile student card?

The Pivo mobile student card works when you are an enrolled student and your membership has been activated in the Student Union’s membership register. If you pay the membership fee and/or pick up the validity sticker at Microkadu campus service points, you will immediately have access to Pivo. If you pay the membership fee online and cannot collect the validity sticker for your plastic card at the campus service points, you will need to send a separate request to activate Pivo.

Why is my mobile student card not working?

You may not have registered as an enrolled student, you may not be a member of the Student Union, or your mobile student card may not have been activated in the Student Union’s membership register. To activate the mobile student card in the membership register, you must have paid the membership fee. If you are an enrolled student and have paid the membership fee, please send a mobile student card activation request to the Student Union. You will receive a message about the activation in your school email. Activation also takes place when you collect the validity sticker for your plastic student card. Please note that the mobile student card stops working when you are marked as graduated in Savonia.

Why does my Slice mobile student card not show a photo even though I attended the card photo session/provided a photo to the Student Union?

If you downloaded the Slice mobile student card before your photo was saved in the Student Union’s register, the photo will not automatically transfer to the mobile student card. In this case, you will need to reset your Slice account using this link. After resetting, you will receive a new account to download Slice. If you still cannot log in with the new credentials, uninstall the app, reinstall it, and then log in.

What membership-related matters can I handle in the online store?

In the online store, you can order your first student card, request a new card if yours is lost or your name has changed, and, of course, pay the membership fee.

How do I log in to the online store?

The online store can be accessed at here: online store. To log in, use your Savonia email address and campus ID after selecting the membership product.

6 / STUDENTS ON A PATH TO DEGREE

I am a path student. Can I get a student card?

Path students are not entitled to student financial aid, and therefore, you cannot obtain a student card. You can get a student card once you have progressed in your studies and have been granted a degree right.

I have been granted the degree right. How can I order a student card?

If you participated in the card photo sessions at the beginning of your pathway studies, please inform us about your degree right, and we will order a student card for you with your photo. Contact  jari.smolander@savonia.fi or call 044 7855069.

7 / TRANSFER STUDENTS

I have transferred to Savonia from another university of applied sciences. What should I do?

Transfer students will receive a new student card because the UAS student card is specific to each university and student union. If you are studying at the Microkatu campus, the easiest way to handle this is to visit the Student Union office (E-building, 3rd floor) to take care of the necessary arrangements. If you are studying at the Iisalmi, Varkaus, or Music and Dance campuses, you can order the student card through the online store.

Can I get a validity sticker for a card issued by another university?

The validity sticker on the student card serves as proof of payment of the membership fee to the Student Union. Therefore, you cannot get a new sticker for a student card issued by another university / student union.
